Mamure Castle is a medieval castle on the Mediterranean coastline built by the rulers of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia (1198–1375) on the foundations of a fourth-century Roman castle.Designed to protect against pirates, it was restored during the Byzantine era and during the Crusades.When Alaattin Keykubat I of Seljuk Turks captured the ruins of the castle in 1221, he built a larger castle using elements of the earlier fortifications.The castle was renamed as Mamure (prosperous) after it was rebuilt by Mahmut between 1300 and 1308.It was restored in the 15th, 16th, 18th centuries and by the General Directorate of Foundations in the 1960s.
