Lago Coldai from Pala Favera: A Dolomite Dream Hike

Getting There:

  • By Car: Drive to Pala Favera, a small village near Passo Staulanza. There’s a large parking lot (fee applies) near Rifugio Pala Favera.
  • Public Transport: Take a bus to Zoldo Alto, then a taxi or shuttle to Pala Favera. Check local schedules as they vary.

When to Go:

  • June-September: This is the prime hiking season when the trails are clear, the meadows are bursting with wildflowers, and the Rifugio Sonino al Coldai is open for meals and overnight stays.
  • Shoulder Seasons: May and October can be lovely, with fewer crowds and a chance to experience the vibrant fall foliage, but be prepared for unpredictable weather and some snow on higher parts of the trail.

Hiking Trails:

The most common route is trail from Pala Favera. It’s about 5 km (3.1 miles) one-way and takes 2-3 hours to ascend.

  • Start: Rifugio Pala Favera (1507 meters / 4944 feet)
  • Ascent: The initial part of the trail winds through a fragrant pine forest, offering pleasant shade on a warm day. As you gain elevation, the trees give way to open meadows, carpeted with wildflowers in summer. Keep an eye out for marmots basking on rocks and the occasional eagle soaring overhead.
  • Landmark: Pass by Casera Pioda, a charming mountain hut serving light refreshments and local specialties. Take a moment to soak in the panoramic views of the valley below.
  • Arrival: Rifugio Sonino al Coldai (2132 meters / 6995 feet). From here, it’s a short, steeper climb up to Forcella Coldai for the iconic view of Lago Coldai, a pristine lake reflecting the majestic peaks that surround it.

Alternative Routes:

  • From Alleghe: Take a cable car to Piani di Pezzè and hike trail . This route offers a slightly different perspective of the landscape.
  • For Experienced Hikers: A more challenging route ascends from Alleghe via the Via Ferrata delle Trincee (requires climbing gear and technical skills).

Where to Stay:

  • Rifugio Sonino al Coldai: This is the main accommodation option right by the lake, offering dormitory-style rooms and meals. Enjoy a traditional Italian meal on the terrace, taking in the stunning views of the lake and mountains.
  • Rifugio Pala Favera: A simpler option at the trailhead, with dorm beds and basic meals.
  • Hotels in Zoldo Alto: Several hotels in the valley provide more comfortable stays, but you’ll need transportation to Pala Favera.

Additional Tips:

  • Trail Conditions: Check trail conditions before you go, especially in shoulder seasons.
  • Essential Gear: Sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing for changing weather, plenty of water, and snacks.
  • Fitness Level: This hike has a decent elevation gain, so be prepared for some exertion. Pace yourself and take breaks to enjoy the scenery.
  • Photography: Don’t forget your camera! The views of Lago Coldai, the surrounding mountains, and the wildflowers in bloom are truly postcard-worthy.
  • Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails, pack out all trash, and avoid disturbing the local flora and fauna. Leave no trace and help preserve this beautiful natural environment for future generations.
