“Every seven years, it emerged from the mist. The isle of “Hy-Brasil,” aka the ancient Irish Atlantis bound to the whims of the sea, revered by locals as the home of their pagan gods, or else, as the outpost of a lone magician and his castle – the rumour mill never stopped churning. Nor did the island’s sightings, despite centuries of technological advances. In fact, studies to find the island have gone down as recently as 2007, which had us wondering if this phantom island has truly been spoken for”.
Firstly, the name – not to be confused with the South American country – stems from the Irish Uí Breasail, meaning “the descendants of Bresail”, one of the country’s grandest clans, and bres, which roughly translates to a “mighty beauty” in Irish.
Since about the 14th century, folks have positioned it roughly 321 km (200 miles) to the west of Ireland main land
“There was a lost city called Kilstiffen off the Cliffs of Moher, according to the legend — which sprawls grandly over the Atlantic Ocean on the western coast of Ireland. The city was submerged and, according to legend, will remain so until the golden key to the gates are found.
Plato seemingly based the geographic description on Ireland. However, that does not automatically mean that Ireland politically once was the utopian Atlantis state Plato described. That could be part of the fiction.
The Cliffs of Moher, on the west coast of Ireland, are along Ireland’s famous Wild Atlantic Way.
“If you look south towards Spanish Point, you might see an area of disturbed water. This marks the location of the ancient city of Kilstiffen or Cill Stuifin (also called Kilstapheen or Kilstuitheen).
The city will not be restored until the key is recovered from its unknown location – some say it lies under the ogam-inscribed gravestone on Slieve Callan, east of Milltown Malbay, while according to others it was thrown into the little lake on the top of that mountain. No one knows for sure
. The city, with its golden-roofed palaces, churches, and towers, may at times be seen shining from below the surface. Once in every seven years, it rises above the waves. But beware!! It is said that those who catch a glimpse of this city will die before it appears again.
The church bells are said to still ring out in times of danger and harps to play their mournful airs on the feast of All Souls.
Within the reef of Liscannor Bay there are submerged forests and bogs and this combined with the record of a great earthquake and tidal wave between 799 & 802AD form the basis for the legends of the sunken city or lost island.”
