While not as common as in other parts of the United States, Montana does experience tornadoes.
Frequency and Season
On average, Montana experiences about 6 tornadoes per year, with most occurring between late May and early August. Fortunately, the state has a relatively low average of tornado-related fatalities.
Tornado Strength
Tornadoes are categorized using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, which ranges from EF0 (light damage) to EF5 (incredible damage). While Montana has seen stronger tornadoes, most tend to be on the lower end of the scale.
Notable Events
- The most powerful tornado recorded in Montana occurred on June 29, 1961, reaching an F4 on the Fujita-Pearson scale (the predecessor to the EF scale).
- In 2023, an EF-3 tornado touched down in Baker, Montana, resulting in injuries and property damage.
Risk Areas
Certain areas of Montana are more prone to tornadoes than others. Wibaux County, Fallon County, and Carter County have historically experienced a higher frequency of tornado activity.
Staying Safe
While tornadoes are relatively rare in Montana, it’s important to be prepared:
- Stay informed: Monitor weather forecasts and pay attention to severe weather warnings.
- Have a plan: Know where to seek shelter in case of a tornado warning.
- Take precautions: Secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds.
By staying informed and prepared, you can help ensure your safety during severe weather events in Montana.
