Namibia, A Dream in the Drawer

For years, the torn-out magazine page had been tucked away in my bedside drawer, its edges frayed and the colors faded. The photograph depicted Sossusvlei, Namibia’s renowned sand dunes that tower over the white clay pan like rust-colored giants. The mere sight of it consistently sparked in me a profound yearning to explore this remote and ethereal landscape.

What countries do you want to visit?

I am Simona, and I am a lifelong dreamer with an insatiable wanderlust. I had dedicated countless hours to researching Namibia, perusing travel guides and blogs, determining potential itineraries, and diligently saving every ounce of money for my aspired journey. I had imagined myself hiking through the Namib-Naukluft National Park, admiring the ancient rock formations of Spitzkoppe, and tracking desert-adapted wildlife like elephants and rhinos.

I had meticulously crafted a comprehensive packing list, taking into account the arduous desert climate and the diverse terrain I would encounter. It was essential to wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sturdy hiking boots. However, I would also need a headlamp for nighttime navigation, a lightweight sleeping bag for camping under the stars, and a camera to capture the breathtaking landscapes.

Before falling asleep, I would replay the imagined scenes in my mind. I would feel the warm sand under my feet, the wind whipping through my hair, and the sun beating down on my skin. I was able to smell the dry earth and the distant scent of acacia trees. I would hear the silence of the desert, broken only by the call of a lone bird or the rustle of a lizard.

The dream was so vivid and tangible that it resembled a cherished recollection awaiting its creation. I was constantly reminded that there was a world out there, vast and unexplored, just waiting for me to discover it.

I came across a discounted flight to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, while browsing through a travel website. I was overcome with emotion. Is this the indication I had been anticipating? I promptly reviewed my savings, calculated my budget, and arrived at a decision.

It was time to transform my aspirations into a reality. I booked the flight, finalized my itinerary, and packed my bags before embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. Namibia, welcome.
I boarded the plane with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, clutching my dog-eared travel guide and a worn map of Namibia. I gazed out the window, watching the Italian landscape fade into the distance, replaced by an endless expanse of blue sky. I felt a sense of excitement, knowing that a new adventure was just beginning.

When I first arrived in Windhoek, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the landscape. The vast open plains were dotted with acacia trees and the occasional herd of grazing antelopes. I rented a sturdy 4×4 equipped for off-road adventures and headed south towards the Namib Desert.

The drive was lengthy and dusty, but the scenery was breathtaking. The landscape changed from rolling grasslands to towering sand dunes, with their colors changing with the changing light. As the sun began to set, I pulled over and watched in awe as the sky began to explode into a fiery palette of orange, pink, and purple.

I awoke the following morning to the sound of sand hitting my tent. Overnight, a windstorm had blown in, turning the dunes into a swirling vortex of sand. I quickly packed my gear and continued my journey, despite the wind whipping at my clothes and stinging my eyes.

After several hours of driving, I finally arrived at Sossusvlei, an iconic salt and clay pan surrounded by towering red dunes. I parked my car and began walking, my boots sinking into the soft sand. As I ascended higher, the vistas became increasingly breathtaking. From the top of the dune, I could see for miles, the endless expanse of sand stretching out like a giant canvas painted in shades of red and orange.

Over the next few days, I spent the next few days exploring the Namib Desert, hiking through canyons, climbing dunes, and searching for wildlife. I observed springboks jumping through the grasslands, ostriches racing across the plains, and even a lone oryx silhouetted against the setting sun.

One night, while camping in the desert, I was treated to a truly magical experience. As darkness fell, the sky burst forth with a multitude of stars, their luminosity so intense that it appeared to cast shadows on the ground. I recline on the sand, captivated by the awe-inspiring celestial spectacle, feeling small and insignificant in the face of such colossal splendor.

As my journey through Namibia continued, I discovered that this country was filled with surprises. I visited the Skeleton Coast, a stunning stretch of coastline dotted with shipwrecks and bleached whale bones. I traversed the Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world, where the sheer cliffs abruptly descend into a deep gorge. I even had the opportunity to track black rhinos with a local conservation group, learning more about their efforts to protect this endangered species.

Namibia was more than simply a destination; it was a journey of self-discovery. The obstacles that I encountered, ranging from traversing treacherous roads to enduring adverse weather conditions, pushed me beyond my capabilities and imparted to me the significance of exhibiting resilience and perseverance. The awe-inspiring splendor that I witnessed, spanning the majestic dunes to the expansive constellations of stars, instilled in me a profound admiration and appreciation for the pristine beauty of the natural world.
