In the Irish language, “gealltanas” means promise, a word that carries deep cultural significance, reflecting the solemnity and sincerity of making a commitment. Throughout Ireland’s history, the act of making a promise has often been ritualized, underscoring its importance within the community and the moral weight it carries.

A fascinating example of this is the Bargaining Stone on Iniscealtra (Holy Island) in County Clare, located along the River Shannon; a place we take our groups each year. This stone is not like typical holed stones found at many ancient sites across Ireland. Instead, it consists of three recumbent slabs forming a long channel, shaped over centuries by the lapping waves of its lakeside location. The stone’s unique form and setting have made it a poignant symbol of promise and agreement.

Historically, locals used the Bargaining Stone to seal promises and contracts by joining hands through its channel. This practice of physically connecting while making a vow infused the act with a tangible sense of binding honor and communal witness. Up until the mid-20th century, such practices were common, and with the resurgence of tourism in recent decades, the stone has found a new role in ceremonies like the renewal of marriage vows.

The placement of holed and channeled stones like the Bargaining Stone often at church sites suggests that these rituals were typically overseen by priests or other religious figures, particularly during “pattern” day celebrations. These community gatherings on saints’ feast days and other holy days provided a structured opportunity for individuals to make public oaths, seal deals, or even forge alliances under the watchful eyes of their community and spiritual leaders.

How do rituals and symbols like the Bargaining Stone help reinforce the seriousness of our commitments? In what ways can we bring intention and respect into the promises we make today?
