One night when the clouds had flown away to play tag among the branches of the tallest pines, one star took pity on the mountain’s cry and darted down from the sky. It slipped through the rocks and crevasses of the mountain until it lay weary on the edge of a precipice. Brrr!!! … It was cold … The star regretted its decision to leave the serene tranquility of the sky. The frost would certainly have killed it.

But the mountain, grateful for that proof of friendship given from the heart, ran for cover. She wrapped the star with her rock hands in soft white fluff. The star clutched her, binding itself to the mountain with tenacious roots. And when dawn broke, the first Edelweiss had been born.
