Montenero d’Orcia (Castel del Piano, GR). Inhabited since prehistoric times, the castle of Montenero is first mentioned in a document from 1015 as the property of the Abbey of San Salvatore. Of the walls of Montenero some sections are still identifiable there is a stone arch followed by a vaulted passageway leading to the upper part where the Cassero Senese, rebuilt in the 15th century on the pre-existing Aldobrandesque fortress, is located.Only the tower, hidden among the trees in the public park, is preserved, from which the final part of the Val d’Orcia and a vast hilly area along the Valle dell’Ombrone can be overlooked. – Near Montenero d’Orcia.
