In the small town of Blufi, nestled in theprovince of Palermo with a population ofaround 1,000, a breathtaking naturalphenomenon takes place annually. FromMarch onwards, spectators are treated tothe mesmerizing blossoming ofinnumerable crimson tulips thatspontaneously thrive in a wheat field,amidst almond and olive trees, creating ascene reminiscent of artworks by Monet.
These exquisite flowers grace thelandscape with a charm akin to Monet’scanvases during their bloom in Blufi, fromMarch through May. They are particularlyresilient to soil disturbance due to thedepth of their bulbs, approximately 50centimeters below the surface. Thisspecies of tulip, known as the Early Tulip(or Raddi’s Tulip, Tulipa raddii, namedafter the botanist Giuseppe Raddi), is animmigrant species of mysterious origins.
The striking crimson tulip field draws inthousands of visitors from Sicily andbeyond each year, all eager to witnessthis unparalleled spectacle reminiscentof the famed tulip fields of Holland.
This “slice of Holland” serves as asignificant draw for Blufi, capturing theattention of countless curious visitors,especially photographers.
