Tricolour Arrows plane crashes: 5-year-old girl dead, mother and father and little brother burned

It was supposed to be a test for a Tricolored Arrows display scheduled for Sunday, but one of the planes lost altitude and crashed to the ground involving a car passing on the road. On board was a 5-year-old girl who died: her mother, father and little brother were injured and burned. The aircraft crashed near Turin Caselle Airport, north of Turin, on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 16. The MB-339 was in formation for a test phase for an exhibition scheduled for the following day: the aircraft disunited from the formation of other aircraft it was traveling with and crashed to the ground. Impressive images taken by bystanders show the plane losing altitude, crashing and catching fire after impacting the ground. Just before the pilot managed to be ejected from the cockpit and open the parachute. The out-of-control plane crashed into the car, which overturned and then was completely engulfed in flames. The car was traveling on the road next to a corn field near St. Francis al Campo. It was hit by the aircraft, leaving the victim no chance.

“I have an engine problem” – The pilot allegedly reported an engine problem to his crew chief during the flight. At this point the major reportedly reported that he had to disengage from the formation. He subsequently lost control of the aircraft and operated the ejection device from the cabin.

The victims – The family aboard the car are residents of the town of San Francesco al Campo, a short distance from the crash site. According to Adnkronos reports, behind the wheel was P.O., 49, by his side his wife, V. V of 41, and, in the back seats, their two children. From the car, which overturned and burst into flames shortly after impact with the aircraft, only the older of the two children, 12, could be extracted in time. For the little girl, 5, it was too late. The 12-year-old transferred to Regina Margherita, burns also for the mother, in code yellow at Cto, and for the father and pilot, transferred in code yellow to San Giovanni Bosco. The young boy suffered second-degree burns over about 15 percent of his body. He was conscious on arrival and was sedated. From initial assessments, he would have no major injuries. He is now hospitalized in intensive care and the prognosis at the moment is reserved. Dynamics to be clarified – The pilot saved himself by jumping with his parachute, after activating the emergency system. The other Frecce Tricolori aircraft, on the other hand, completed the landing, at the Collegno air base: on Sunday they were supposed to participate in an exhibition organized for the 100th anniversary of the Air Force. The hypothesis is that the accident was caused by a bird impact (bird strike). Because of this, the aircraft, Pony 4, became ungovernable. The Arrows patrol was expected at 5 p.m. at the Vercelli aero club. Air Force note, bird strike hypothesis-“The formation had just taken off to head for Vercelli, where it was to perform an air show, when for reasons yet to be ascertained the Pony 4 aircraft piloted by Major Oscar Del Dò lost altitude and crashed to the ground. The pilot, immediately before impact, managed to perform the ejection maneuver,” the Air Force explained in a note. “It is not possible at the moment to confirm the cause of the accident. One of the hypotheses under consideration, given the dynamics of the event, is that of an impact of the aircraft with a bird (in technical jargon Bird strike) during the very early stages of takeoff.”

Event canceled, Ivrea prosecutor’s office investigates – On Sunday, the Frecce Tricolori were supposed to be the highlight of an exhibition at the Turin-Collegno aero club organized for the centenary of the Air Force. The event was canceled. So was the Pink Sound concert scheduled for Saturday night. At the scene of the accident was the mayor of Turin and metropolitan, Stefano Lo Russo. The Ivrea (Turin) prosecutor’s office will investigate. The chief prosecutor, Gabriella Viglione, has decided to make an inspection. The Caselle airport is under the jurisdiction of the Turin prosecutor’s office, but the exact spot of the crash is in the territory of the municipality of San Francesco al Campo, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ivrea judicial offices.

The investigation – “Investigations are ongoing, which, as you will understand, are complex, lengthy. At this moment we cannot say much, we are still doing all the surveys. The law enforcement agencies have all intervened. We still have to collect various pieces of the plane and the findings from the car. At the moment we cannot say much more, everything is being investigated,” Gabriella Viglione clarified. “The car was transiting,” the prosecutor pointed out, stressing that “the news that is coming from the hospitals is reassuring but unfortunately the child is deceased. All operations “will not be short,” she added. Regarding the hypothesis of an impact with a flock of birds, the pm spoke of “probability, but we have to verify everything.” Meanwhile, operations at the Turin airport are subject to indefinite delays due to an accident

The other incident – Only a few hours earlier, also in the Piedmontese capital, another aircraft accident occurred. At the Aero Club, an aircraft in the process of landing went off the runway and overturned: according to initial information, the pilot failed to brake in time due to a system failure and the jet folded over a wing into the grass. Fortunately, the pilots and spectators were unharmed, but it was necessary to interrupt the cycle of performances, also called to celebrate the centennial of the Air Force. Firefighters also responded to the scene. “Nothing serious, situations that have happened to me many times,” Aeroclub President Alberto Bannino had commented. “The weekend of appointments will continue as soon as recovery operations are completed.” But there was still no word on the family swept away by the plane.
