Mercedes-Benz is recalling thousands of EQS cars in China, the second recall in the past month.

The German luxury automaker is recalling 2,324 imported EQS vehicles with production dates ranging from June 14, 2021, to July 8, 2022, starting today, according to an announcement posted on the website of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

According to the announcement, the recalled vehicles could disable the electric drive module due to a software problem, resulting in a loss of vehicle power when the signal from the electrical connector connecting the electric drive module to the disintegrator is abnormal.

Mercedes-Benz will update the electric drive module software for recalled vehicles free of charge through authorized dealers to eliminate the potential safety hazard.

Mercedes-Benz will also recall 1,051 imported EQS vehicles with production dates between June 14, 2021, and Feb. 16, 2022, and a total of 16,500 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class vehicles produced in China with production dates between April 23, 2019, and June 1, 2022, starting Aug. 28.

These vehicles present a safety risk due to deviations in the development process of the high-voltage battery management system, where the high-voltage battery monitoring function does not issue a warning to alert the driver as expected in the event of a battery malfunction.

According to the announcement, Mercedes-Benz will update the battery management system software for recalled vehicles through authorized dealers free of charge.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz will also recall 12,750 imported S-Class vehicles with a production date between July 29, 2020, and Sept. 8, 2021, starting Aug. 4.

Operation of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) may be impaired in these vehicles due to a software problem with the on-board auxiliary electrical system voltage converter.

Mercedes-Benz will update the on-board auxiliary electrical system voltage converter software for the recalled vehicles free of charge.

On July 19, Mercedes-Benz recalled 32,786 imported S-Class and EQS vehicles in China due to an ESP software problem.

Mercedes-Benz launched the EQS electric sedan in China in December 2021, with a current starting price of 881,000 yuan (about 110,000 euros).

The German luxury carmaker launched the EQS SUV in China in February, with a current starting price of RMB 910,500 (about 120 thousand euros, a huge amount in the Chinese market).

Mercedes, like other foreign automakers, has performed weakly in China’s competitive electric vehicle market, although it still has high hopes for this market. Despite this, the Stuttgart automaker plans to invest heavily in the Chinese market

At the same time, these later recalls severely damage the German automaker’s image of reliability, explaining why it has not been able to break through in the Chinese market where consumers are by no means foul-mouthed and the widespread use of social media can destroy a brand’s image in a moment.
