CURIOSITIES AND COMMON ERRORS – THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME MANHATTAN
this is a very common mistake, also heard by many tourist guides. Many are convinced that the name Manhattan, deriving from the language of the natives of the Lenape, who populated the territory, means “the land with many hills”; in reality it is not so: the word derives, in fact, from Manahahtaan, composed of “manah”, which means “to gather”, “aht”, which means “bow”, and “aan”, which was an element used to conjugate verbs. In the language of the Lenape, it can be translated as “the land where we collect the wood for the arches”. The first written discovery of the word, as “Manna-Hata”, dates back to 1609, by one of the ship’s officers of Henry Hudson, a British navigator who, on behalf of the Dutch India Company, patrolled the island, anticipating the future colonization #manhattan #newyorkcity #newyorkworld #newyorklovers #newyorkhistory #newyorkstories #newyorksecrets #newyorkitalian
